For my personal research project in the Martial Arts Club, I implemented a mandatory senior-year research requirement to leave a legacy for future members. My project explored how historical events, like wars and colonization, shaped martial arts. I focused on Capoeira’s shift from a dance to a combat form during Brazil’s colonization, and how it later returned to recreational and spiritual practices. I also compared similar transformations in Karate and Taekwondo, examining their emphasis on mental and spiritual growth. This research encouraged members to view martial arts through a broader historical and cultural lens.
